Ever wondered what it’s like to go on safari?
You might have seen the glossy brochures showcasing rugged safari vehicles, those brilliant, open-sided work-horses that take you away from the crowds and allow 360° views of the splendid landscape, and are driven by local guides that seem to know instinctively what’s round the next bend. Well, at Embarque Travel we like to take you that little bit further, and by working in partnership with independent UK based tour operators, we can open your world up to an even broader wealth of exciting possibilities that you might not have considered.
Throughout East and Southern Africa, wildlife safaris are traditionally conducted in National Parks. Government protected areas, rich in natural history and easily accessible, however, if you dream of being liberated from the 4x4 to try something different, a private reserve is where you should be heading.
Whilst conservation and protection of wildlife is still key to their core philosophy, private reserves also allow visitors the flexibility of additional activities. There tend to be fewer vehicles too, as only those staying on the reserve can explore them. Many reserves offer immersive experiences, a chance to learn alongside researchers following migration patterns, lion pride dynamics and not forgetting the endless list of indigenous bird species.
The opportunity to explore a reserve on foot, closely accompanied by your guide of course, opens your eyes to a micro world of plants, bugs and small mammals, that you might otherwise miss from the cab of a vehicle. It’s a peaceful, gentle, unhurried encounter where you can really test your guide’s knowledge!
Depending how adventurous you want to be, there’s an activity with your name on it. Horseback hacks for all, novice up to expert , boating and canoe trips to get up close and personal with hippos; mountain biking, quad biking, dune sledging, scuba diving, gorilla trekking, hot air balloon flights and sleeping out under the stars to name just a few!
